Knockout by Suzanne Somers, Attacks Cancer Establishment

Suzanne’s new book, Knockout, relates her personal story with cancer in which she searches for doctors curing cancer with new techniques.  In the book, Somers interviews pioneering MD’s who successfully treat cancer patients using new or innovative treatments not recognized by the cancer establishment.  The book brings to light new information that the cancer establishment desperately seeks to suppress, and indicts chemotherapy and mainstream cancer treatment as largely ineffective.

The Establishment Fights Back- Larry King Canceled

Suzanne’s scheduled Book Interview on the Larry King Live show Monday night at 9 PM was canceled and hastily replaced by Wolf Blitzer’s pablum.  The canceled Larry King Show with Suzanne included two of the doctors from her book, Stanislaw Burzynski and Nicholas Gonzalez.  Wolf says the show has been rescheduled for Friday night at 9 PM.

Why the cancellation?  I suspect the networks are being pressured by the cancer establishment not to air the show.  After all, cancer treatment is a big business run by large corporations that fund the television networks with huge advertising revenues.  Allowing Suzanne Somers to highlight alternative cancer treatments that work is not in their best interest, nor is it in the best interest of the TV networks who depend on advertising revenue from these corporations.   The last thing their shareholders want is a huge bite out of annual profits.

Book Interview With Ann Curry Today Show

Suzanne appeared with Ann Curry on the Today show Monday Oct 19, in a brief 4 minute Book Interview (see clip below).

Susan’s Cancer Scare

Susan relates a frightening experience when she entered the hospital with respiratory symptoms and was told she had cancer spreading throughout her lungs.  Thankfully it was a false alarm.  A lung biopsy showed it was not cancer, rather it was a common fungal illness, Valley Fever, also called coccidiomycosis.  Years ago in my training days as a radiologist, we commonly saw evidence of old “Valley Fever” infections on Chest X-Rays as characteristic small rounded calcifications in the lungs.  These were incidental findings that required no treatment.

The Failed War Against Cancer

Regarding cancer treatment, I sense a general feeling of frustration in the population.  On a personal note, I can tell you that many people in my community are stricken and dying from cancer with little help from the mainstream medical system.  The medical treatments with cytotoxic chemotherapy are cruel and barbaric treatments, serving to prolong agony and suffering for a few additional months.  Friends and family stand by, helplessly, watching their loved one gradually succumb.

This dismal failure of conventional cancer treatment was recently highlighted by the rapid demise of Ed Kennedy with a fatal brain tumor, a glioblastoma.  In spite of the best care available in the US, a high profile personality who had actually crafted health care legislation himself,  suffered the same dismal 6-12 month survival as any one else.

The Time is Ripe for Health Reform

Perhaps Suzanne Somers also correctly reads this public frustration with cancer. and her new book is perfectly timed to take advantage of the changing tide of sentiment.

Suzanne Somers trots out onto the stage three MD’s working outside of the mainstream cancer paradigm with considerable success.  Here they are:

Stanislaw R. Burzynski, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Burzynski isolated peptides called antineoplastins which have anticancer activity. Results have been impressive for brain tumors, such as the one that killed Ed Kennedy, and another type of cancer called lymphomas.

James W. Forsythe M.D

Dr Forsythe has considerable success treating cancer with a nutritional supplement called Poly-MVA, invented by Merrill Garnett.  This is a non-toxic nutritional supplement that contains palladium, and takes kills cancer cells while it spares normal cells.

Nicholas Gonzalez MD

Dr Gonzalez treats cancer with a protocol developed by William Kelly based on the work of embryologist John Beard called the Trophoblast Theory of Cancer.  Gonzalez uses high dose pancreatic enzymes along with a detailed nutritional supplement program.  Gonzalez has had considerable success with cancer remissions in advanced cases, especially pancreatic cancer.

Hounded by Regulatory Agencies

Rather than hailed has pioneers, all three have been hounded by regulatory agencies and persecuted for ”thinking outside the box”.  Forsythe for example, was set up by a rogue FBI agent who posed as a patient asking for growth hormone.  The case was thrown out of court.  Burzynski battled in court with the FDA for many years ultimately emerging the winner.  Gonzalez also has his brush with the New York State medical board.   He was reprimanded in 1994 and  license placed on probation for “departing from accepted practice”. He eventually resolved the issue and remains fully licensed.

A More Favorable Interview at Insider

Reduce Your Risks of the H1N1 – Swine Flu – with Vitamin D

Vitamin D research and information is in the news everywhere these days. One of the most shocking results came from a nationwide study in the U.S. that found about 9 percent of the children were vitamin D deficient but 61 percent of them were vitamin D insufficient. Conversations are also ongoing related to how much vitamin D is enough. Last week an Institute of Medicine committee held meetings in Washington D.C. to review dietary reference intake recommendations for vitamin D and calcium. Some preliminary reports imply the recommendation will go up because of the overwhelming information that suggests a high level of insufficiency is present in both children as well as adults.

Hearing about a need for vitamin D for bone health is not new. Information related to the benefits of adequate vitamin D to reduce risks of heart disease or improve inflammation is also not new. What may be new in vitamin D research is the investigation of a relationship between vitamin D levels and a potential role in reducing risks for influenza, especially when the H1N1 pandemic is looming. This may provide a new reason to take your vitamin D intake a little more seriously this fall and winter.

With many fears of a worldwide pandemic of the H1N1 (formerly known as the Swine Flu) virus this fall and winter, many health investigators are looking for new ways to prepare. The Public Health Agency of Canada is looking at the vitamin D levels of individuals who have contracted the disease. Researchers are looking for a link between lower levels of vitamin D and contracting the influenza virus. The hope is that if there is a link this may provide a potential to decrease the likelihood of contracting the virus.

This investigation comes from previous epidemiological evidence that suggests there could be a role of vitamin D related to seasonal influenza according to the agency. The typical pattern of influenza each year is that it is worse in the winter and rarer in the summer. While there can be a variety of reasons for this, one potential reason held by many health experts surrounds the observation in northern and southern hemispheres that the flu tends to be worse when sunshine exposure is the most limited.

A potential link between vitamin D and reducing risks of influenza intrigues me. I typically do not contract the flu and neither do people in my family. Growing up my siblings and I typically only caught a cold and the same was true for my husband’s family. Our children to date have never had the flu or a flu vaccine. So, why do we not get the flu when many other people contract it each year? Could it be the way we eat or do we just have great genes? Both my husband and I grew up in milk drinking homes and our family today averages about five to six gallons of milk a week as a family of four. We also drink fortified orange juice daily, and have eggs, tuna and salmon weekly while also getting outside regularly for short periods without sunscreen. I could be reading too much into the coincidences or perhaps there is something to this vitamin D protection theory.

The Bottom Line
You can find vitamin D in oily fish and the yolks of eggs as well as in fortified products like milk, soya, orange juice and vegetable margarines. If you include dairy and eggs in your vegetarian based diet, you may be just fine in your vitamin D intake. However, if you are a strict vegan, you will want to pay close attention to your intake since you do not find vitamin D in plant-based foods. It is ideal to aim for 800-1000 IU of vitamin D each day with at least 400 IU coming from food sources if possible. A multivitamin-mineral supplement may be the way to go to make up the remainder if you find that you are low in other key nutrients as well. If you are not short on other nutrients, you may want to consider a calcium supplement that contains vitamin D so you have both key nutrients to maximize bone health benefits as well as any potential protective benefits from influenza from vitamin D. Check the source of your supplement and select one that contains cholecalciferol or D3 if possible because of its better absorption. In addition, to maximize your supplement absorption, take your supplement with a meal or snack that contains some fat.

Don’t Throw Away Those Pumpkin Seeds This Halloween

pumpkin-seedsSubtly sweet and nutty with a malleable, chewy texture, the roasted seeds from inside your Halloween pumpkin are one of the most nutritious and flavorful seeds around. While pumpkin seeds are available year round, they are the freshest in the fall when pumpkins are in season.

Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flat, dark green seeds. Some are encased in a yellow-white husk, although some varieties of pumpkins produce seeds without shells. Like cantaloupe, cucumber, and squash, pumpkins and pumpkin seeds belong to the gourd or Cucurbitaceae family.

Health Benefits

Pumpkin Seeds May Promote Prostate Health

Benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH, is a condition that commonly affects men 50 years and older in the United States. BPH involves enlargement of the prostate gland. One of the factors that contributes to BPH is overstimulation of the prostate cells by testosterone and its conversion product, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Components in pumpkin seed oil appear able to interrupt this triggering of prostate cell multiplication by testosterone and DHT, although the exact mechanism for this effect is still a matter of discussion. Equally open for discussion is the relationship between pumpkin seed oil extracts (which could be purchased in the form of a dietary supplement) and pumpkin seeds themselves. The prostate-helpful components found in the oil extracts are definitely found in the seeds; the only question is whether the amount of seeds eaten for a normal snack would contain enough of these prostate-supportive components. The carotenoids found in pumpkin seeds, and the omega-3 fats found in pumpkin seeds are also being studied for their potential prostate benefits. Men with higher amounts of carotenoids in their diet have less risk for BPH; this is the connection that has led to an interest in pumpkin seed carotenoids.

Zinc is one further nutrient found in pumpkin seeds that might impact prostate function. The fact that pumpkin seeds serve as a good source of zinc may contribute to the role of pumpkin seeds in support of the prostate. However, studies about the relationship between zinc and BPH show mixed results, and more research is needed to determine the circumstances under which zinc might be helpful versus harmful.

Protection for Men’s Bones

In addition to maintaining prostate health, another reason for older men to make zinc-rich foods, such as pumpkin seeds, a regular part of their healthy way of eating is bone mineral density. Although osteoporosis is often thought to be a disease for which postmenopausal women are at highest risk, it is also a potential problem for older men. Almost 30% of hip fractures occur in men, and 1 in 8 men over age 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture. A study of almost 400 men ranging in age from 45-92 that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a clear correlation between low dietary intake of zinc, low blood levels of the trace mineral, and osteoporosis at the hip and spine.
