It isn’t as simple as it used to be when searching for ab exercise equipment. A couple of years back there weren’t so many choices so it was simple, but that’s not the situation now. Numerous fitness experts have come up with a variety of ab exercise machines promising to develop six pack abs if you use it for a few weeks. With the right type of ab machine it’s easy to develop awesome six pack abs.

In order to understand and choose which machine is effective for you it helps to know how this machine has developed. Here’s a look at the various stages that it went through.

Sit-ups: Before the Machine

Before the first ab machine was even conceptualized, people were already familiar with the significance of ab muscles. Back then, in order to develop these muscles, people used to do sit-ups for a long time. Research has found that this may potentially lead to lower back troubles. If sit-ups aren’t done correctly it can cause unnecessary strain on the back muscles as it compensates for the extra work on the ab muscles. This eventually led to increase in cases of back aches and back muscle spasms.

Integrated All-body Workout Machines

When fitness enthusiasts started to hit the gyms machines were designed to shape and tone specific areas of the body. The early gym machines targeted several muscles simultaneously, the biceps, triceps, shoulders, back, etc. This enabled the user a variety of exercise movements with different resistence settings using counterweights attached to bars by cables. The only problem is that these machines were extremely bulky, difficult to move around and extremely expensive.

Tension-Balanced Abdominal Equipment

Prompted by the idea of counterweights, fitness professionals started focusing on devices that concentrate on specific muscle groups like the abs. This is what officially gave birth to the idea of the abdominal exercise equipment.

To address portability, the first abdominal exercise machines were lightweight, usually foldable and made use of springs and elastics instead of weights. They forced the user to mimic the action of sit-ups but added difficulty levels in the form of tension settings. As crude as they were they did a satisfactory job targeting and developing the abdominal muscles.

Abdominal Rollers

It was later discovered there are safer forms of movement that address stomach muscles without having to stress the back so much. Ultimately it evolved into what we refer to as ab rollers. Like their predecessors, these rollers were also lightweight and often foldable, some even came in the form of rubber balls. Simulating the action of crunches as opposed to sit-ups, these rollers supplied better support for the back and prevented the back muscles from compensating for the abdominals. They were safer, but some people questioned whether it was as effective as previous ab machines.

As technology and research improves more abdominal machines are now being produced. And until a sure-fire way of getting the six-pack ab look is developed, even more ab machines will be made. However, there isn’t any single equipment that can produce the look that you’d like. Health and fitness experts agree that although exercise indeed helps in firming muscles, there’s still more to getting the perfect abdominals than simply by flexing.
