The decision has been made; you are going to treat yourself to a massage – or hopefully a number of massages! How do you go about finding a massage therapist?

The best place to start is to ask friends for a referral. In the event that you know a massage therapist but they work at a high-end salon don’t be afraid to talk to them – they may offer more affordable private sessions in their home.

It definitely helps if you know what you want. You are far more likely to see the right massage therapist if you can describe the type of massage that you are looking for when speaking with a spa receptionist. Is it simply Swedish Massage you want or do you want Shiatsu, deep tissue or maybe reflexology? It is usually a good idea to avoid massage therapists who practice many types of massage unless they truly have the credentials and experience to back it up – most will specialize in only a couple different massage techniques.

You can also find literature in doctor’s offices or perhaps if you go to a Chiropractor. Experience is certainly something else that you need to look for. This however not a guarantee – there are talented rookies and burnt-out veterans.

You do not necessarily need to go to the therapist – some will come to you. Obviously if you go to a spa you will benefit from a nicer environment with more amenities. Probably the best selling tables on the market today are Earthlite massage tables. They come in a wide range of models. If you opt for say an in-home massage then you would likely see a lightweight portable model such as a Spirit Massage Table being used whereas a high-end salon might use one of their luxurious Ellora Massage Tables.

A final piece of advice would have to be to shop around. You will know when you have the right blend of skill and an environment you feel comfortable in.
