Organic Food, Is It Genuinely Beneficial?
The notion of “organic food” has existed for generations. Recently however, it is being more popular and has turned into quite a hype that’s drawing a lot of people into it. People involved in the health food business are making huge profits during this hype as organic food costs more then the non-organic foods found in the shop. Taking that into consideration, is natural food really better for us? Should we be paying out more money on food that is allegedly better for you?
Before I proceed I want to make clear what is meant by organic. When something is organic it indicates that there has been nothing added to it. Such things as synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, unnatural fertilizers and pesticides may not be used with organic food. In relation to organic meat, eggs and daily products, these have had no antibiotics or growth hormones (GH) added to enhance the speed that they may be produced.
The procedure for growing commercial organic food is not an easy one as a total of 3 years need to pass before their crops can be termed “organic” The reason behind this waiting period is to allow the soil to develop natural nutrients and minerals so that the new crop is totally free from chemicals when it is grown Certainly, growing organic food is no easy job and thus the price tag can be justified Then again, is all that challenging work worth it? Is organic foodstuff seriously going to make a substantial improvement to my health?
The good news is that there are actually numerous good reasons to buy organic food. Firstly, organic food has more nutritional value then the non-organic alternative. Milk from cows that have been organically bred contained, on average, 50% more Vitamin E, 70% more Beta Carotene, 2 times as many antioxidants and more Omega-3 than milk created in the conventional way. Organic food is also free of many of the chemically enhancing agents mentioned earlier which could have a damaging effect on your health. Moreover, you do not run the risk of taking in cancer causing toxins which is a massive benefit to picking organic food. Many have mentioned that organic food also provides a better taste but that’s usually just a personal preference.
Organic food is also advantageous for the environment. Pesticides and insecticides have been proven to have a significant effect on the worldwide ecosystem and as organic food features neither of these its better for the ecosystem. This will all contribute to a decreased degree of pollution during food production and thus will not have an adverse effect on global warming. Additionally, it is important to note that when farm animals are bred on organic food they are also usually treated well so that they will also produce well. Unlike the small cages and the force feeding methods found on many other farms, organically fed animals are generally “free range” and are allowed to walk around in open areas.
I personally think that organic foods tend to be better, not just for your overall health but also when it comes to the environment and the welfare of animals. As with anything thats good you will discover drawbacks, with organic food its the cost, so its up to you to ascertain whether or not youll benefit from spending more for organic food.
